Spring Valley Fourth Grader Jhenson Cruz-Arroyo was Spring Valley Principal for a portion of the day on Friday, November 6th, 2009. Cruz-Arroyo won this honor for "having the best behavior in his class," according to Mrs. Christie Bass. Mr. Cruz-Arroyo spent his recess assisting Spring Valley's Assistant Principal Ms. Christie Bass.

Purple Stingers from each classroom were rewarded with a movie and "healthy" snack in the Spring Valley Media Center. Each month classroom teacher choose their best-behaved student to participate in the Purple Stinger Celebration. Miss Parker, Mrs. Thomas, and Mr. Elmore oversaw this event.

On Wednesday, October 14th, Spring Valley Elementary became the first school in Durham Public Schools to implement
a standing, student-ran safety patrol. Students were nominated for this honor by faculty nomination and an interview
process. Students that were selected for this position will undergo an extensive training process conducted by The North
Carolina Central University School of Education and University Police. Mrs. Daphne Grant, Mrs. Sandra Overton and Mr. Donte
Morrow are the in-school sponsors.

Raper, Thomas Win Spring Valley Honors PDF Print E-mail

Mrs. Susan Raper and Mrs. Azaille Thomas have been honored by their peers as Spring Valley Teacher of the Year and Teacher Assistant of the Year, respectively.

 Mrs. Raper, a second-grade teacher, is a native of Durham. She attended the Bethesda School and graduated from Southern High School. She earned a bachelor's degree from Appalachian State University and a master's degree from Elon University. She began her teaching career at Bethesda Elementary in Durham before becoming a tenured faculty member of Oak Grove Elementary. Mrs. Raper is among the many former Oak Grove staff that came to Spring Valley to initiate the the opening of Durham's newest public school.

 Mrs. Azaille Thomas is in her fourth year of service with DPS. She began her career at Oak Grove Elementary as the media assistant and has since served our district in a variety of capacities. Like Raper, Mrs. Thomas came to Spring Valley from Oak Grove to initiate the opening of the new school. At Spring Valley, Mrs. Thomas serves as a third-grade teaching assistant, an Academy of Reading Lab Facilitator, and a remediation tutor.
